Capital gains tax calculator

This tool can help you estimate your investment income based on data downloaded from your member portal. This is provided to help members who live in certain U.S. states that tax HSA earnings. These estimates may have rounding errors and are based on data that may not contain all of the information required for proper tax reporting in your state.

To estimate the income for your HSA you will need the following information:

  • Investment income (estimated with this tool) - this includes the dividend income as well as the short and long-term gains (or losses) incurred when shares are sold.
  • Interest income - The cash portion of your HSA may have earned interest during the tax year. You can find the interest earned for the year on your "HSA year-end statement" in your member portal (under Docs & forms > Tax forms).
  • Account fees - Consult your tax advisor regarding the deductibility of any fees charged related to your investments or maintaining your account. All fees are reported on your monthly account statements.

Estimate your investment income

Part 1: Download your investment portfolio performance

  1. Log into your account with a web browser and navigate to Investments section (My Account > Investments).
  2. Click the "Portfolio performance" sub-navigation link.
  3. Change the "Start Date" to be a date before you began investing or even had an HSA (i.e. 1/1/2000) to make sure that you get all of your investment activity in the file. Failure to get all of the investment activity may result in inaccurate results.
  4. Make sure the "End Date" contains the whole tax year you are interested in (you can leave it on the current date).
  5. Make sure the Investment Fund selected in the drop-down is "All".
  6. Click the "Download" button and save the resulting file in a location that you can then choose later.

Part 2: Upload and calculate

  1. Click the "Choose File" button and select the file you just saved.
  2. Make sure to select the cost basis, tax year, and check the "I understand.." checkbox.
  3. Click the Calculate button

Note: Please print out the results to retain the information. Remember to use the same cost basis each year for your HSA investments.
